In the midst of Israel’s ongoing state of emergency, and despite the immense challenges of war, mobilization and emotional strain, Shalva brought joy and dignity to those who needed it most. The result was one of the most heartwarming and meaningful celebrations the center has ever hosted.

Over 300 people took part – family members, friends, staff and volunteers – who came together to honor each child and celebrate their coming of age. The hall was filled with music, decorations, laughter and love – transforming what might have been an overlooked milestone into a day that will be remembered for a lifetime.

Since the October 7 attacks, thousands of Israeli families have been impacted. Many parents were called to serve in the reserves, and in countless homes, festive events like birthdays or religious milestones had to be postponed or canceled altogether.

At Shalva, however, no child was left behind. The organization made it a mission to ensure that these children – regardless of circumstance – would celebrate their special moment in the most beautiful way possible. Not a “replacement event,” not a modest alternative – but a full, joyful, meaningful celebration that radiated hope.

Yochanan Samuels, CEO of Shalva, emphasized: “Especially when everything around us is so unstable, it’s our duty to remember those who are easily forgotten. Our children were not forgotten – not in peaceful times and not in times of war. This bar and bat mitzvah celebration is our way of saying: even in the hardest times, there is light, hope and joy – and these children deserve all of it.”

Kalman Samuels, Shalva’s founder and president, added with heartfelt emotion: “At Shalva, we believe that every child – without exception – deserves their moment in the spotlight, surrounded by love. This celebration was more than an event; it was a statement. We see each child, believe in them and celebrate who they are. Especially in challenging times, it is our privilege to offer pure joy – the kind that fills hearts and gives us all strength to carry on.”

The event was the culmination of months of detailed preparation: logistical coordination, medical arrangements, accessibility adaptations, personalized outfits, professional photography, transportation, live music and everything in between. Some of the children use wheelchairs, others require close assistance – but Shalva ensured that no challenge would stand in the way of joy.

Yehonatan Avraham, director of Shalva’s afternoon programs, shared: “We don’t compromise when it comes to our children. This event wasn’t ‘nice to have’ – it was essential. Every detail was thought through. It was our way of showing them how much they matter. And despite all the obstacles, nothing was going to stop us from making it happen.”

One parent, whose daughter uses a wheelchair, spoke through tears: “We never imagined she’d have a bat mitzvah celebration. Logistically and emotionally, it felt impossible – especially during these times. But Shalva made it happen. To see her up there on stage, smiling and celebrated – that’s a moment I will hold onto forever. Without Shalva, it simply wouldn’t have happened.”

The event featured a beautifully decorated venue, music, personalized gifts, festive meals, surprises and heartfelt moments that lifted everyone’s spirits. But above all – it was a clear message: “I belong.”

In the most challenging of times, Shalva proved once again that with compassion, dedication and unwavering belief – dreams do come true. And most importantly: no child is ever left behind.
