In October 2024, Merz pushed for the resumption of German arms shipments to Israel, reinforcing his firm stance of unwavering support. "He speaks out clearly against antisemitism and highlights the importance of protecting Jewish life in Germany," Jewish community members said.
Merz has a close relationship with Rabbi Teichtal. Every year, the rabbi places a menorah at CDU headquarters, and last year, Merz attended the lighting ceremony, delivering a holiday blessing. "After the lighting, Merz told me he was very happy the menorah stood here at party headquarters but even more so that Jewish life in Germany is thriving," Teichtal recalled.
The rabbi sent Merz a message on Tuesday, reading, "Congratulations, Friedrich Merz, on your election victory. Your friendship with the Jewish people and strong support for Israel are of immense value. Your commitment to fighting antisemitism and ensuring a thriving Jewish future in Germany is inspiring."
Teichtal, a Chabad emissary, added: "I deeply appreciate our personal connection and recall your participation in our annual menorah lighting at the CDU’s Konrad Adenauer House. Your presence and warm words were a significant testament to your friendship and commitment. I especially remember one of our conversations about how one of your names is Joseph — not only a biblical name but a symbol of leadership and strengthening society.
“Just as the biblical Joseph helped lead with wisdom and vision, your leadership is a powerful force for the common good. I wish you strength and success in your important role and look forward to our continued friendship and partnership."
