Israel’s national soccer team kicked off its 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with a 3-1 victory over Estonia on Friday night, but the win was followed by an unexpected controversy involving team captain Eli Dasa.
Local police reportedly sought to question Dasa, who plays for Dynamo Moscow, over remarks he made during a pre-match press conference regarding his time in Russia amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.

When asked about playing in the country, Dasa said, “I consider myself a moral person. I’m thankful for my years in Russia, proud to play there and proud of my team.” His comments triggered backlash in Estonia, which shares a tense border with Russia and has been a vocal critic of Moscow since the invasion of Ukraine.
During the match, Estonian fans expressed their disapproval by booing Dasa each time he touched the ball. A banner was also displayed in the stands targeting Dasa, with the letter “D” in his name highlighted in red. A UEFA official ordered the sign’s removal, and it was taken down.

According to the Israeli Football Association, two Estonian police officers arrived at the team’s hotel intending to take a statement from Dasa. However, the defender was advised to remain in his room and not go to the hotel lobby. Israel Football Association Chairman Shino Zuaretz intervened, speaking with the head of the Estonian Football Association, UEFA officials and local authorities. The officers eventually left without questioning Dasa.
After the game, Dasa responded calmly to the crowd’s reaction: “A player hears boos for many reasons during a career. I take it with love. Every day of the last year and a half has been a rollercoaster. We’re here to bring joy to the people of Israel.”
